Conics: Review

Here are 4 different interactive sketches to help you practice how to graph and write the equations of the 4 conic sections. You can drag around any points in the sketches to change the graph. Doing so will also change the equations in the sketch. You can double click on the sketches to open them up in a bigger window. Enjoy!

Conics 7-8: Hyperbolas

Here is a quick graphing example. Please note that this example varies slightly to the method we've been using in class. The major difference is that we construct a box using the a and b values found from the equation to help draw in the asymptotes. This person just sketches them without a box. Please make sure you're drawing the box to help keep things organized!

Conics 3 – Parabolas

Here's a quick animation that shows how we made the parabola in class today. The directrix is the 12cm line we drew first. The focus is the point we drew up above. The point labeled, "TickMark" represents a mark we made on the directrix. In class we drew them 2cm apart, but we could have many a bunch of those marks. The red line labeled, "crease" would be the crease made in the paper when we folded the tick mark on top of the focus. In order to create a bunch of crease lines, just click and drag on the tick mark point and slide it along the directrix. Enjoy!

Conics 2 – Circles

Here is the animation from class.  You can drag around the center of the circle and point B to see how the equation changes.  You can reset it back to the initial settings by clicking the little "recycle" logo in the upper-right corner of the animation. You can also move around the labels of the circle and points by clicking and dragging on the labels. Enjoy!
